Corvinone is believed to be a subvariety of Corvina. It has a lower alcohol content and slightly lighter color than Corvina, but is more aromatic. Corvina and Corvinone have the same meaning, but are not genetically related. Corvo is the Italian for “crow”, so may be the name evoked its dark plumage. It could also come from “corba”,the Italian for the basket used to transport the grapes . The cluster is big, less compact than Corvina’s, with two wings; the berry is big and oval, bluish black, covered with bloom. It is sensitive to botrytis, dawny mildew and sour rot. It ripens later than Corvina. Suitable for withering.
The resulting wine is ruby red, intensely perfumed of fruit and spices, with body, softness and tannins.
